Survey-Why Users Shifting From PC To Mobiles?
Today, Due to the latest technology in mobile phones people are shifting from PC to mobile phones and becoming ‘Mobile-First’.The question is why people are shifting towards mobile phones.One reason may the use of internet on cell phones because now people use mobiles to connect with their family and friends through internet.But a complete survey was done to understand and check the other reasons.
mig33 is a mobile social networking platform working in India with rapid growing in smaller towns.In order to take survey, a random selection of users was made from tier 1, tier 2, and tier 3 cities.To understand the results in various categories, every user was asked ten questions.During Jan-Feb 2011, the primary research was done via interviews.
Tier includes cities-Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Pune, Ahmedabad
Tier 2 includes cities-Indore, Bhopal, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Lucknow, Patna, Cochin, Surat, Baroda, Kanpur
Tier 3 includes cities-Bharuch, Gwalior, Allahabad, Ajmer, Madurai, Mysore, Belgaum, Rajkot, Ludhiana, Amritsar
Results have shown that in tier 3 cities 68% of mobile users used social media sites and make new friends and also chat with strangers.Only 43% people connect with thier real life friends on social media sites.And in tier 1 cities 92% of people use social network sites to connect with their real life friends.
Social networking in tier 2 and 3 towns is more about entertainment and making new friends as opposed to tier 1 cities where it is about being in league with majority of friends. For the mobile-first community, social network is a companion rather than a place to meet companions.
Above results shows that more than 50% users spend 30 minutes for every session and only 9% users spend 5 minutes.It is clear that time spent per session on mobile social networking in tier 2, tier 3 cities is far higher as compared to tier 1 cities, who check their social networking sites at regular intervals.Tier 2, Tier 3 city users have a lot of free time during the day and less entertainment options which leads to the spending more time on social networks.
Virtual Avatars is helping tier 2, tier 3 users in gaining more confidence and making them extrovert, very few tier 2, tier 3 users display their real pictures on social networks.
Love/Dating/Flirting virtual gifts are most popular like hug, kiss etc as they provide an easiest means to chit-chat with another users of opposite gender, which is otherwise difficult in tier 2, 3 cities.
Every 1 out of 3 users plays games to bulid online reputation while only 1 out of every 6 plays games as a habit.
Most people exchange virtual gifts to impress the opposite gender especially in tier 2 and tier 3 cities.Interestingly, it is also perceived as a way of saving on real gifts.Again, it emerges that virtual paying capacity is reputation factor.
About 60% of the users in tier 2 and tier 3 cities subscribe to under RS.50/- GPRS plans.Tier 1 city users have higher spending on GPRS plans.Tier 2 and Tier 3 city users go for small value plans like Rs.5/- GPRS plan for 2 days.
User spend maximum on sub Rs.15 virtual goods and avatar items.In tier 3 towns almost 80% of the users are spending below Rs.15 per month, while tier 1 shows greater interest in high priced gifts.
